Health Science and Research Career Counselor

The Health Science and Research Career Counselor is a subject matter expert for students interested in post graduate careers in healthcare and/or research. This professional provides and promotes experiential learning opportunities and other career development activities necessary to adequately prepare students for future careers. Dually reports to Hart Career Center and Academic Advising. This is a full-time, on campus position (11 months/year). Responsibilities:

  • Health Science and Research Career Counseling; in collaboration with faculty, provide individual and group career counseling to all students pursuing healthcare, nursing, and research careers; in collaboration with academic advisors, assist students with course planning to ensure compliance with various professional school admission requirements; stay up to date on trends and testing/admission requirements relevant to healthcare professional programs; guide students through all steps of the professional school application process; meet with prospective students interested in majors related to careers in health, science, and research
  • Coordinate Experiential Learning; cultivate internships, externships, research, volunteer, and shadowing opportunities by working with IWU alumni, faculty, development team, and local, regional, and national organizations; collaborate with Hart Career Center internship coordinator to assist students who wish to apply for credit-bearing internships
  • Programming & Workshop; provide educational programming, workshops, and specialized networking events for students interested in careers in healthcare and/or research; support student recruitment by assisting with the planning and implementation of career fairs including taking a lead role for the annual nursing fair
  • Committee participation and Data Analysis; collaborate with faculty to serve on the Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Advising Committees by assisting students with the creation and evaluation of professional school application packets, mock interviews; Gather and analyze data regarding healthcare professional program student applications, acceptances, rejections

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Three years related experience; preference for prior career counseling and knowledge of healthcare and research career paths
  • Occasional overnight travel (1-3 trips per year)

$20.51-$22/hr, based on experience (11 months/year)
