Students Invited to Conversation about Allyship, Inclusivity in Schools
March 23, 2022
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Aspiring Titan teachers will have the opportunity to learn methods to foster a supportive environment for the LGBTQIA+ community in schools on Saturday, March 26.
The Teaching Titans Colloquium will host A Conversation on Allyship and Inclusivity in School at 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 26, at Hansen Student Center.
“We wanted to do this event to start a conversation on how to approach different topics when we become teachers, administrators, etc.,” said Em Chamberlain ’25, president of Project LEAD and organizer of the event.
Chamberlain, who is non-binary, said the goal of the conversation is to help LGBTQIA+ students and teachers feel represented and respected, and to encourage allies to support the community.
“Additionally, we have tips and advice to bring inclusivity to our classes right now on campus. By starting this conversation, we hope to see more people continue it and make change,” said Chamberlain.
With the recent rise in legislation affecting LGBTQIA+ rights, Chamberlain said these conversations are more important than ever.
“We, as future teachers, should care about all of our students, whether we share their
beliefs or not. They are put into our care, so we should do all we can to support
them. I hope that my peers are able to learn how to make classes inclusive – their
own and on campus,” said Chamberlain.
While the event is intended for education students, Titans from other majors are also welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided. Click here to RSVP and to note any allergies or dietary restrictions for lunch.
Students are encouraged to contact Teaching Titan leaders with any questions about this colloquium, through Project LEAD , the Student Education Association , IWU’s chapter of the National Association for Music Education , Kappa Delta Pi honor society or Golden Apple Scholars .
