RSO Social Media Guidelines

For Affiliated Organizations

These guidelines are intended for communicators using social media accounts affiliated with Illinois Wesleyan University, such as registered student organizations. (Related guidelines are available for accounts representing the University on behalf of departments and offices.)

Freedom of Expression. Illinois Wesleyan University is committed to fostering an environment that upholds the principles of freedom of expression, academic freedom, and open dialogue.

Nevertheless, please remember that certain types of speech are not protected under the First Amendment, including speech that incites lawless action or violence, true threats of violence, legally obscene speech, defamation (knowingly and publicly harming an individual’s reputation), fraud, and perjury.

Representatives of affiliated organizations should be aware of standards of conduct applicable to members of the Illinois Wesleyan community, and abide by University policies related to conduct, privacy, and copyright. Various University handbooks and policies, such as the Student Handbook and the Sexual Misconduct Policy, provide definitions and sanctions against harassment and intolerance.

Political Activity. As a non-profit, private institution of higher education whose activities are regulated in part by Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, the University is prohibited from engaging in partisan political activity or permitting its resources to be used for support of such activities. Sponsored postings, events or programs that include candidates for public office or their designees must follow guidance and assistance from the Office of the President. In all cases, political fundraising is strictly prohibited, and all requests must be reviewed by the Office of the President.

Personal opinions should not be represented as the university's or organization's viewpoint. Illinois Wesleyan's flagship accounts (@illinoiswesleyan on Facebook, @il_wesleyan on Instagram, @IL_Wesleyan on X, @illinoiswesleyan on Tiktok ) are the official accounts representing the University.

We expect that members of the Illinois Wesleyan community engage in public communication with civility and fundamental respect:

  1. Respect applicable copyright and fair use laws
  2. Respect the privacy of others and yourself.
  3. Remember that colleagues, family members, peers and current/future/potential employers may see your content.

Please exercise discretion and act responsibly.
