Dave Petrick, IWU Class of 1967

Dec. 15, 2022

To the Titan community,

It is with great sadness that I report news of the death of David C. Petrick ’67, a lifelong entrepreneur and ardent supporter of Illinois Wesleyan University.

Dave passed away on Friday, December 2, at his home in Frankfurt, Michigan, after a battle with cancer.

Dave was a former member of Illinois Wesleyan's Board of Trustees and served as chairman of Bretford Manufacturing in Franklin Park, Illinois. Founded by Dave’s father and uncle in 1948, Bretford produces technology furniture products for schools and businesses.

During his time as a student at Illinois Wesleyan, Dave studied political science, met and married his wife Ellen (Reid) '68, and established his deep-rooted connection to the University. The Petricks have been instrumental in developing IWU’s initiatives centered on innovative thinking — particularly as lead donors for The Petrick Idea Center.

Dave had described the project – envisioned as a focal point on campus for innovation, creativity and collaboration – as "a culmination of our passions and dreams.” While we're deeply saddened that he won't be here to witness its anticipated completion in 2025, it's our honor to fulfill his hopes for inspiring Illinois Wesleyan students and equipping them to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.

Among many gifts to their alma mater, Dave and Ellen also provided support to Hispanic students through a scholarship fund and contributed the addition of two group-study rooms in State Farm Hall. Additionally, Dave was integral in forming the DTE Program.

We are grateful for Dave’s enthusiasm for cross-disciplinary learning and his desire to give IWU an edge among liberal arts institutions. His entrepreneurial spirit will always be felt on campus, providing inspiration and opportunities for future generations of Titans.

Sincerely,

Georgia Nugent
