Keio University in Tokyo is both one of the oldest and one of the top-ranked universities in Japan.  The university is the first private institution of higher learning in Japan and dates back to the formation of a school for Dutch studies in 1858 in Edo (now Tokyo) by founder Yukichi Fukuzawa. Since the school's inception, the students of Keio have risen to the forefront of innovation in every imaginable academic field, emerging as social and economic leaders.

A large research university, Keio has approximately 29,000 undergraduates--of which about 1,000 are international students.  Illinois Wesleyan is one of 16 US institutions with an exchange agreement with Keio University and we are unique in being able to send students for either a semester or a full year of study.

In an exchange program, students at the participating institutions essentially exchange places, ideally on a one-on-one basis. An IWU student participating in the Keio exchange program will pay IWU tuition yet study at Keio University; similarly, a participating Keio student pays Keio tuition for a year of study at IWU.

IWU students may study at Keio for a semester or the full academic year, and the course of study is mainly Japanese language, though students with previous Japanese language study may take international studies and Japanese studies courses taught in English by Keio University faculty.
